Saanich Inlet: The Saanich Inlet (48°40’N.,123°30’W), also known as Saanich Arm is a body of salt water that lies between the Saanich Peninsula and the Malahat highlands of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Located just northwest of Victoria, the inlet is 24 kilometres (15 miles) long, has a surface area of 65 square kilometres (25 square miles), and its maximum depth is 225 metres (738 feet). It extends from Satellite Channel in the north (separating Salt Spring Island from the Saanich Peninsula) to Squally Reach and Finlayson Arm in the south. The only major tributary feeding the inlet is the Goldstream River. Wind conditions in the inlet are generally light with a preponderance of calms, especially in summer. The inlet is fairly well protected from the northwest-southeast pattern which prevails throughout the Gulf, but occasional southwest winds blow into the Inlet over the Sooke Hills from Juan de Fuca Strait.  Tidal streams in Sannich Inlet are fairly weak with a maximum range of 12 feet.  The flood is slightly stronger along the west shore with the ebb being slightly stronger off Pat (Patricia) Bay and Deep Cove.
