Wise Island (48º54Â’N., 123º27Â’W) is situated in Trincomali Channel on the South West side of Galiano Island and North West of Parker Island and located close to Montague Harbour (Marina and Marine Park) on Galiano Island.
The Cottage: The well positioned cedar siding architect designed 1 1/2 story home built in 2000 + is approximately 1050 finished square feet (97.5 square metres) with four bedrooms (one on main floor and three (small) up – two with back to back built-in bunks); four piece bathroom (toilet is BoiLet Composting Toilet http://www.biolet.com); living room with fireplace and in-line dining/kitchen – opening onto large deck area (23 x 10 feet / 7.01 x 3.05 metres). Features: solar powered, floor to ceiling picture and small row windows (see photoÂ’s), fireplace, wide plank fir floors, cedar siding, thermo pane windows, kitchen with appliances (refrigerator and stove) and maple cabinets, single French doors. Propane (3 tanks*) services the space heater (Hunter), hot water (Bosch), stove and refrigerator.
Services: Domestic water is by a community system (see photos) with an annual charge being about $300.00. Power is by Solar (1500 watt inverter, 3 – 75 watt solar panels, 650 amp hour battery bank – powering AC outlets, lights, TV, Microwave, etc. There is also a 1500 watt gas backup generator. No septic system – see above cottage information.
The Property: The private beautifully treed (arbutus {a.k.a. madrona}, fir, Garry oak-rare in this location) natural state property (no landscaping) with rock outcroppings has an East North East exposure. The lot is approximately 0.42 of an acre (0.17 hectare). The shared dock for this property is about a four minute (400 feet/122 metres) easy walk – see plot plan.
The Docks: The Island has two shared docks with Aquatic LeaseÂ’s for owners use. One at the north end and the other on the south end which has recently been upgraded – it is only a few hundred metres easy walk to the cottage
Waterfront: Low bank frontage of 380 feet (116 metres) +/- with easy access with sloping rock and small beach being ideal for small boats, kayaks and canoes. You can moor your larger boat offshore which is protected from prevailing winds.
Area and Location: Wise Island is situated in Trincomali Channel on the South West side of Galiano Island. The peaceful and serene area is considered to be a prime area and is often referred to as “the jewel” of the Gulf Islands. One way of access the island is by Ferry (www.bcferries.com) from Vancouver/Tsawwassen or Swartz Bay on Vancouver Island to Galiano Island (Sturdies Bay) and then by private boat to the Island. The general area is excellent for boating, canoeing, kayaking, diving and summer swimming. Plus fishing, crabbing, shrimping and mollusks. The area also has a lot of wildlife and marine life – such as soaring Bald Eagles, Hawks, Gulls, Blue Herons, shore birds. Otters and Seals are quite common plus pods of Orcas (killer whales).
The Island: Wise Island is about 190 feet (58 metres) high and nearly ½ mile (.804 Km) long. The Island is beautifully treed (Arbutus/aka Madrona, fir, juniper, cedar), and natural state growth with rock outcroppings. There are several coves and beaches. The island is divided into 48 lots (not strata) with a path way/road (no vehicles!) running the length of the island. There are three small parks and two common docks being at North and South ends. (usage fee about $259.00 annually). Once you sleep on an island you will never quite be the same!
This well positioned recreational retreat property is easily reached by private boat, water taxi or float plane. There is a barge service (Gulf Coast Navigation Ltd.) available for transporting heavy goods, propane*, etc.
